An Appeal for Religious Freedom in the Commonwealth

The following is an email I just sent to my Pennsylvania Representative David Millard:

subject: WW Bridal Boutique and Religious Freedom

Rep. Millard,

I would like to discuss with you in the near future how the Bloomsburg University College Republicans can work with you this fall, but unfortunately that is not the topic of this email.

From what I understand, W.W. Bridal Boutique in Bloomsburg has already, or will be refusing to sell bridal gowns to a same sex couple.  Though as a Christian I believe in a traditional view of marriage of one man and one woman, I understand that as far as the state is concerned it is just a legal document.  Therefore I’ve largely been uninterested in the topic.

However, I strongly believe in religious rights.  I was very disappointed that  Arizona Governor Jan Brewer vetoed SB 1062 which would have protected religious freedom.  Instead, Christians who run businesses are being faced with two choices:

Go against your faith, or
Go out of business.

I think we should feel emboldened by the recent Supreme Court decision that ruled in favor of Hobby Lobby refusing to pay for abortifacients.  This was a ruling in favor of religious freedom.  Refusing to sell one's goods or services to an event (event instead of individual separates this from discrimination laws) they are religiously opposed to is both a matter of religious freedom and freedom of association.

Let's be honest: There is a reasonable possibility that Governor Tom Corbett will not be reelected.  We need legislation passed ASAP to protect W.W. Bridal Boutique as well as all religious business owners in the Commonwealth.  Please take the lead on this, as you will have the support among your constituents.  I will do what I can to help.

Sincerely,
Tony Beard
Bloomsburg, PA
